Wang Wen European Tour 2018

Wang Wen started together in Dalian, a coastal city of Northern China, almost 20 years ago in 1999. They have nine recorded albums, one OST for movie and one split record with Pg Lost from Sweden. With more than one record every two years, and a clear devotion to break through any past achievements every time, the band is recognized as the one leading instrumental rock band of China.

In 2016, Wang Wen recorded their ninth album in Dalian, the “Sweet Home, Go!”. The band worked with western producers for the first time, the Wouter and Lode brothers. This album included six long piece of instrumental works an one pure vocal song. They joined together into a solemn dirge with unique texture.

Many changes were made long after the recording, while the band members want to express more mixed emotions with conflicting story lines, the producers want to show a clear train of thoughts beneath it all. They achieved a delicate balance after much back and forth dragging. It is another search into the musical wilderness beyond Wang Wen’s own scope. The process of recording is also made into this documentary for your interest.

Now, Wang Wen is coming with this new album, for our fourth tour of Europe!

“Sweet Home, Go!” was a real achievement of Wang Wen. The record was selected as the “Best Albums of 2016 in China No 1” by Beehype; Arctic Drones give it a 8.9 and also selected it as the best 50 albums in 2016; Post-Rock Listeners’ Choice: the 50 Best Releases of 2016. Wang Wen was also given the award of the best rock musicians of the year 2016 by Abilu Music, and the best in-strumental band of the year 2016 by Midi Music.

About Sweet Home,Go!

Early January 2016, during the coldest time of the year, Wang Wen completed the 9th studio al-bum in Dalian, China. What was different about this album is that it was the first time we got Wouter and Lode to produce a record for us. For this album we recorded 6 long songs and an a cappella track recorded in an abandoned factory.All these songs were created within the last 3 years, but went through the ringer of change during the recording process. During recording an album, a band wants their music to be full of expression and feeling and to have the freedom to explore new threads, contradictions and conflicts. Producers on the other hand are looking to make the sequence of music more clear. In the end, the two sides of the spectrum strike a balance and complement each other. To Wang Wen, this was another experience in our journey to further understand and explore ourselves and the outside world.

Over the last few years, it feels like time had been spinning out of control. As time speeds by it makes people feel an indescribable excitement but also a feeling of suffocation. Just as we become used to the ways of today, things change in a flash. The Internet has seemingly brought people closer together. Actually it’s changed our existence by taking our “relationships” and turning them into rigid blocks of data, unable to blend into each other and therefore plunging us into the many deep cracks of space and time.

Is Sweet Home, Go about surpassing the gulf of time? Yes, but a different kind of gulf. English. Music is always light and heavy, but it should never just be a quick fix of energy or a mood en-hancer. I’m always imagining, what if the powerful flow of music could stop time and shoot us us out of this cold abyss into the heavenly skies above, then drop us to our deaths.
